Attorney General Jeff Jackson continues to investigate the genetics testing company, urges customers to file a claim.
NORTH CAROLINA, USA โ North Carolinians can file claims against genetics company 23andMe until July 14 as a part of an investigation into a massive data breach from 2023, Attorney General Jeff Jackson said.
Nearly seven million customers with Chinese and/or Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry had their data hacked and sold on the dark web after 23andMe failed to secure their privacy between April and October 2023.ย
23andMe has since settled a lawsuit concerning the data breach for $30 million.ย
However, 23andMe has been in decline ever since, having declared bankruptcy earlier this year, then bought by biotechnology companyย Regeneron Pharmaceuticals only two months later.ย
Jackson has investigated the DNA testing company for some time and has urged customers to delete information from 23andMe’s databases.ย
Jackson continues to investigate and asks any North Carolinians to file a claim against 23andMe if they:ย
- Were a 23andMe customer between May 1, 2023, and October 1, 2023.ย
- Received notice that their personal information was compromised in the breach.ย
- Suffered from financial damages or other non-financial harms from the breach. ย
Folks who want to file a general claim or aย claim concerning the 2023 data breach can file through the Attorney General’s office.
