CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former Charlotte City Council member Tariq Bokhari has been sworn into President Donald Trump’s administration.
Bokhari posted multiple photos on social media Monday night, officially becoming the deputy administrator of the Federal Transit Administration. That group is largely responsible for awarding grants for transit projects.
Bokhari’s last day on the Charlotte City Council was April 20. It’s still unclear who will replace him on the council. The only stipulation is that they must be a Republican.
“We’ve been through a lot of very rough times and we’ve been through a lot of really great victories together,” Bokhari said. “It has been the honor of a lifetime, I will continue to do everything I can to support Charlotte.”
Bokhari, who was one of two Republicans on the council, is widely known for his role as founder of the Carolina Fintech Hub and for his advocacy for transit improvements in Charlotte. He’s primarily held a roads-first view in this arena. He’s also been an advocate for law enforcement and for finding solutions to homelessness.
