ASHEVILLE, N.C. โ When Hurricane Heleneโs floodwaters finally receded last September, AlexโฏWebber thought the worst was over.
The coโowner of On Your Bike Cafรฉ and repair shop had fled New Orleans after HurricaneโฏKatrina, searching for higher ground in the North Carolina mountains.
Instead, she found 3 feet of mud, a gutted storefront and an insurance denial letter.
โThey take your money and they weasel out,โ Webber said, reflecting on the stillโscarred space on Marshallโs Main Street. โI came here thinking this was a climate haven, but thereโs no safe place to live anymore.โ
Webberโs struggle underscores a problem headed for almost every homeowner in the state.
