Rising tariffs and inflation are driving up wedding costs. Local planners say flowers, dresses, and dรฉcor are pricier. Their advice? Plan early and budget extra.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Saying “I do” is getting more expensive. While weddings have always come with a hefty price tag, experts say rising tariffs and ongoing supply chain issues are pushing those costs even higher, especially for couples planning celebrations this year.
Kristen Zywicki, owner of Crafted Charm Wedding Planning in Charlotte, says one of the biggest sticker shocks right now is in florals.
Imported flowers are more expensive to ship, and those extra costs are being passed along to clients. Zywicki says that often leads to tough conversations between planners and couples.
โThe wholesale floral market is being pretty transparent about it,โ she said. โBut youโre definitely seeing an increase in prices across the board.โ
And itโs not just flowers. Wedding dresses, many of which are made with fabric from overseas, are also seeing price hikes due to added tariffs.
“Clients are having to cover those costs, so it’s sort of that hard conversation, but they do realize it’s out of our control,” Zywicki said. “It’s out of the florist’s control, and so it’s just a tough spot to be in.”
Madison Lloyd, owner of Destination Us in Lancaster, says if your dress is already ordered, you may need to reallocate funds from other parts of the budget.
“You might have to change other items in your budget to allow an extra amount to pay for that tariff,” Lloyd said.ย
Lloyd notes that inflation has been steadily impacting weddings for years, from gowns and flowers to decor. One major way to cut costs? Look local. Lloyd says many rental companies also offer decorations to help customers stay under budget.ย
To keep weddings on track, both planners stress the importance of building in a financial buffer. Zywicki recommends adding 5%โ10% to your overall budget as a contingency.
โPut aside a little bit more than you were expecting to,โ Lloyd added. โAnd hire a planner, because weโre here to help you stay within that budget.โ
Flexibility is key. Starting the planning process early, working with trusted vendors, and prioritizing local or secondhand items can help couples navigate rising costs and still have the wedding of their dreams.
