CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster publicly responded to a lawsuit over his decision to send National Guardsmen to Washington, D.C., in support of President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown in the nation’s capital.ย
The South Carolina Public Interest Federation filed the lawsuit this week, claiming the deployment violated state law. McMaster sent approximately 200 troops to D.C. last fall. Trump activated the National Guard and other law enforcement as part of a crackdown on crime.ย
“South Carolinaโs National Guardsmen should not be asked to undertake illegal deployments, or be used to score political points by our government,” Navy veteran James Weninger said.ย
McMaster’s office issued the following statement to WCNC Charlotte about the case:ย
โThe People of South Carolina have empowered their Governors with unambiguous authority to utilize and deploy the stateโs National Guard to save and protect American lives, defend the homeland, and assist in enforcing the rule of law. To suggest otherwise demonstrates either a remarkable ignorance of constitutional and statutory law, or a terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.โ
