RALEIGH, N.C. โ The North Carolina State Board of Elections is launching a process to help schools and government agencies get their student and employee ID cards approved for voting in upcoming elections.
Voters in North Carolina must show a photo ID when voting, and many types of IDs are accepted, including approved school and government identification.
The state is opening applications from Feb. 1 to April 1, which means organizations can submit their ID cards for approval. Any previous ID approvals that were valid in past years have now expired, so organizations need to reapply or confirm their existing identification documents.
Colleges, universities, state and local government agencies, and charter schools can participate in this approval process. If an organization’s IDs were already approved in 2023 or 2024 and haven’t changed, they can simply check a “no changes” box on the application.
Organizations will need to submit a signed form and a digital image of their ID card. They’ll need separate forms for student and employee IDs.ย
These newly approved IDs will remain valid through December 31, 2026, covering several important upcoming elections.
The election schedule includes municipal elections in September, October and November of 2025, followed by the primary election in March 2026 and the general election in November 2026.
“In the last election cycle, more than 100 educational and government institutions had their IDs approved for voting purposes, and we hope that number increases in 2025,โ said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections. โThe State Board is ready to assist these schools and government agencies as they work through the approval process.โ
