CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ The Mecklenburg County GOP is demanding that Sheriff Garry McFadden resign after a heated exchange with lawmakers during his recent testimony at the state capitol.
The party,ย which shared the statement on Instagram on Feb. 10, cited a particular moment where McFadden, as the party states, was unable to identify how many branches of government exist and incorrectly claimed the sheriff’s office fell under the judicial branch.
“Mecklenburg County deserves a sheriff who understands the basics of the office and the Constitution he is sworn to uphold. When the county’s top law enforcement official demonstrates such fundamental confusion about the structure of government, it undermines public confidence and raises legitimate concerns about his fitness to continue in the role,” part of the statement read, penned by party chair Kyle Kirby.
In the wake of the heated testimony, state House Republicans demanded extensive records from McFadden. Lawmakers said the sheriff was “combative and resistant to answering” their questions.
In a letter filed on Wednesday, the three co-chairs of the House Select Committee on Oversight and Reform requested McFadden provide documents by Feb. 28 related to his communications with federal immigration officials, jail operations, inmate deaths, and travel records.
The hearing on Monday focused on safety concerns at the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), where McFadden spent more than two hours in what Rep. Allen Chesser, R-Nash, described as a heated exchange.
Republican committee chairs Jake Johnson, Brenden Jones, and Harry Warren wrote that while they appreciated McFadden’s appearance, “several of your responses relied on deflection or claims of legal constraint that frustrated the vast majority of this Committee’s most important questions, leaving us uncertain about a few matters.”
