The settlement stems from an NC GOP challenge that sought to disqualify hundreds of thousands of voters’ registration records in 2024.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ A settlement was reached in a lawsuit between the North Carolina State Board of Elections, the Democratic Party, and the Republican Party.
The settlement impacts over 73,000 North Carolina votersย whose voter-registration records are missing required information. This information included driver’s license numbers or the last four digits of Social Security numbers. The lawsuit’s parties agreed to the settlement on Monday and are awaiting the court’s approval on the matter.
Two conservative entities, the North Carolina GOP and the Republican National Committee, sued the elections board in 2024, claiming that hundreds of thousands of voters were improperly registered. They sought to have ballots cast by these voters thrown out.
The Democratic National Committee joined the lawsuit on the side of the elections board.
State election leaders originally said around 100,00 voters lacked the necessary information on their registration records. That number has shrunk to around 73,000 voters as of December 2025, according to the settlement.
These voters have been reached out to correct their registration records, but they will not be removed from the state’s voter rolls. In federal elections, future votes from these individuals will count regardless of whether they update their records. However, their votes in state and local elections will only be counted in the future if the requested information is provided or if they request a provisional ballot.
The federal court this case was settled in will ensure the conditions of the settlement are carried out by June 2027.
North Carolina was seen as a key battleground state during the 2024 elections, with President Donald Trump beating former Vice President Kamala Harris by just over 180,000 votes. Many statewide elections went to Democratic candidates.
