The nation’s highest court found that President Donald Trump doesn’t have the authority to unilaterally impose tariffs.
RALEIGH, N.C. โ Gov. Josh Stein joined 18 other governors inย signing a letter urging Congress to reassert its authority over tariffs, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that President Donald Trump lacks the power to impose them.
“Too many North Carolina families are already feeling the squeeze of high prices, and the volatility caused by the federal administration’s tariffs is further exacerbating their pain,” Stein said. “These tariffs are hurting consumers who are now paying higher costs and farmers selling goods overseas.”
The letter calls on Congress to act in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision, which found the president does not have the authority to unilaterally impose tariffs.
Stein has previously raised concerns about the effects of federal tariffs on North Carolina’s economy. Last year, he led a delegation to the Southeast United States/Japan Annual Joint Meeting in Tokyo, where he reaffirmed the state’s economic partnership with Japan and highlighted difficulties that tariffs were creating for international businesses considering expanding into the United States.
The governor also warned last year, at an event in Winston-Salem, that tariffs and related economic uncertainty were hampering Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in the state, cautioning that higher construction costs could reduce the number of homes being rebuilt.
