This comes after a razor-thin race between the two for the Senate District 26 Republican nomination.
North Carolina Senator Phil Berger says he’s formally requesting a ballot recount after a tight race against Sam Page for Senate District 26.
Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page was certified as the Republican primary winner with a 23-vote lead over Berger.
Berger’s campaign team released the following statement this morning regarding the recount:
“Today, Sen. Berger contacted the N.C. State Board of Elections and formally requested a machine recount of the votes in SD-26. We will have no further statement today regarding the potential for requesting a hand recount. If we choose to formally lodge any complaints with the NCSBE before today’s 5 p.m. deadline, we will announce that later today.”
Page released a statement of his own after two Triad counties confirmed his win. “We won this election because the voters of Guilford and Rockingham counties made their decision clear. Phil Berger has the right to request a recount, and I’m confident it will confirm the outcome. We won.”
Guilford County Board of Elections will conduct its recount Tuesday, March 17. The Rockingham County Board of Elections will recount votes for Senate District 26 on Thursday, March 19.
