Jackson says tariffs imposed by the federal government have cost the state billions of dollars.
North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is asking Congress to refund the state’s businesses and consumers for increased costs caused by tariffs.ย
According to a press release sent out by Jackson, tariffs imposed by the federal government costed North Carolina $3.5 billion. The Supreme Court ruled these tariffs unlawful in February.ย
โNorth Carolinaโs businesses and families paid $3.5 billion for tariffs that a court has now ruled were illegal,โ said Jackson. โThat money came straight out of people’s grocery bills and small business budgets. The administration told the court it would pay people back, and now they need to do it.โ
Jackson is now asking Congress to pass a law requiring the federal government to reimburse importers with interests. Businesses that passed tariff costs onto customers are also being asked to issue refunds.ย
Currently, the refund process for importers requires that they request refunds themselves. Only 6% are set up to receive payments.ย
Jackson is joined by attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Virginia in his push for refunds.ย
