CHARLOTTE, N.C. — South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson is calling on lawmakers to temporarily pause the state’s gas tax as fuel prices rose to their highest level since 2022 this week.
Wilson, who is running for governor as a Republican, is asking legislators to suspend the 28-cent gas tax for 30 days to provide immediate relief at the pump.
“South Carolinians are feeling this pain in their wallets, parents buying groceries, seniors driving to appointments, and small businesses that rely on reliable transportation,” Wilson said. “A short, 30-day pause on the state gas tax is a commonsense, targeted step that puts money back in the hands of families right now while we work on long-term solutions.”

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in South Carolina is $3.70, according to AAA. That’s over a dollar higher than this time a month ago. The national average hit $4 a gallon for the first time since mid-2022 amid the war with Iran.
In a statement, Wilson said a temporary suspension of the gas tax would not only provide relief for drivers, it would ensure critical SCDOT projects remain funded.
“I will continue pressing for workable reforms that lower costs, increase transparency at DOT, and eliminate wasteful spending so South Carolinians aren’t forced to choose between gas and groceries,” Wilson said.
