Adams was cleared after an investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member in 2023.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Rep. Alma Adams was investigated by the House Ethics Committee in 2023 over an alleged inappropriate relationship with a member of her staff, according to a report.ย
A NOTUS report states that the committee interviewed several of Adams’ former aides in Washington and Charlotte. Ultimately, investigators found no wrongdoing. A spokesperson for the House Ethics Committee declined to comment on the investigation when asked by WCNC Charlotte.ย
Adams issued the following statement on the investigation:ย
“Congresswoman Adams cooperated fully with the House Ethics Committee’s review, which was thorough and detailed.
The Committee closed the matter after finding no violation of any House Rules and, most importantly, no inappropriate or improper relationship.
Ultimately, the Committee advised that Congresswoman Adams should work to ensure that no staff received preferential treatment, actual or perceived, and that all staff were aware they could raise any concerns without fear of retaliation.
Because the Committee’s comprehensive review found no violation of any House Rules, no penalties were recommended to the full House and the Committee’s review remains confidential.”
Members of Congress are prohibited from engaging in relationships with staffers. Violations of this can lead to the House Ethics Committee investigations, potential expulsion, resignation or reprimand.
Adams represents North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District, which includes Charlotte. She was sworn in as the 100th woman elected to the 113th Congress in 2014. She serves on the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Agriculture.
