Ebola risk in D.R.C. ‘very high’: WHO
The World Health Organization has raised the risk of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola turning into a national outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo to ‘very high.’ The WHO reports almost 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths in the Congo outbreak.
During a World Health Organization (WHO) news conference earlier this morning, experts explained that a risk assessment of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R.C.) shows that the risk for spread at the national level is very high.
In fact, the WHO’s Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed this morning that the outbreak in D.R.C. is “spreading rapidly.” So far, the WHO has reported some 750 suspected cases in D.R.C., with more than 170 suspected deaths.
The current outbreak in D.R.C. is quite concerning, according to experts, in part because it’s caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which doesn’t have a vaccine or treatment.ย ย
According to WHO experts, “global solidarity,” which includes aid, is required to bring the risk level down.
