CALIFORNIA, USA โ Two candidates for California governor will emerge from a massive field of 61 hopefuls in a state primary on Tuesday.
The field of candidates vying to replace Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is crowded. Newsom’s second term is ending in January.ย
Voters will see dozens of names on their ballot, but the strongest performing candidates have included Xavier Becerra, Steve Hilton, Tom Steyer, Chad Bianco, Katie Porter, Matt Mahan, Tony Thurmond and Antonio Villaraigosa.
Notably, candidates like former Rep. Eric Swalwell and Betty Yee have dropped out of the race but still appear on the ballot.
California has nonpartisan primaries, which means registered voters can cast a ballot in Tuesday’s primary, regardless of party affiliation.
Also known as a “jungle primary,” California elections are unique in that the state will frequently have general election ballots featuring two Democratic candidates or two Republican candidates, as the top two candidates advance, regardless of party affiliation, to the November runoff.
Polls close in the Golden State at 8 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.
