WASHINGTON โ Six states are holding primary elections Tuesday, June 2.
Here are key races to watch in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, including live election results starting Tuesday evening and which candidates have been endorsed by President Donald Trump.

California
Voters in California will narrow the field of candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state and the U.S. House, plus multiple local races, including Los Angeles mayor.ย
California has nonpartisan primaries, which means registered voters can cast a ballot in Tuesday’s primary, regardless of party affiliation.
Also known as a “jungle primary,” California elections are unique in that the state will frequently have general election ballots featuring two Democratic candidates or two Republican candidates, as the top two candidates advance, regardless of party affiliation.
Polls close in the Golden State at 8 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.
The field of candidates vying to replace Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is crowded. Newsom’s second term is ending in January.ย
On the Democratic side, the most prominent candidates are Xavier Becerra, who was former President Joe Biden’s Health and Human Services secretary; San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan; Rep. Katie Porter; billionaire hedge fund manager Tom Steyer; state education official Tony Thurmond; and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.ย
The most prominent Republican candidates in the race are Steve Hilton, a British-American political commentator whom Trump endorsed, and Sheriff Chad Bianco of Riverside County.ย
The battle for the governor’s mansion has already elicited controversy.ย
Once among the leading candidates in the race, former Rep. Eric Swalwell dropped out and resigned from Congress in April after sexual misconduct allegations came to light.ย
There are officially more than 60 declared candidates for the race.ย
Among them, a man legally named Barack D. Obama Shaw will appear on the ballot. The U.S. Army Reserves veteran from the San Francisco suburb of Alameda legally changed his name to honor the 44th president in 2013.
Polls show a tight race between Becerra, Hilton and Steyer.
The most recent Republican governor of California was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who completed his second term in office in 2011. ย

With the most U.S. House districts of any state at 52, California will make a big impact in deciding which party controls that chamber.ย
Among the competitive primary races in California is the battle to replace former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in her 11th district, which includes part of San Francisco.ย
Also competitive is the race to replace Swalwell in the 14th district, comprising much of the East Bay outside San Francisco.ย
In many districts, the Democratic and Republican parties have the opportunity to lock up the general election with two members of the same party on the ballot. In 2024, this happened in four House races.ย
Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat, is facing challenges from both ends of the political spectrum in her battle for reelection.ย
Former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, whom Trump has praised, and City Councilor Nithya Raman, whom the Democratic Socialists of America have recommended to their voters, are both looking to replace Bass.ย
Pratt, who dated Heidi Montag on MTV’s “The Hills” became politically active after his house in the Pacific Palisades was destroyed in January 2025. Pratt sued the city of Los Angeles and called for an investigation into Bass and Newsom over their handling of the Palisades Fires.ย
Polls show a close race between the three major candidates to lead California’s largest city.ย
Iowa
Primary elections took place in Iowa to decide on candidates for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, lieutenant governor, attorney general and secretary of state.
In Iowa, voters must register with a political party to cast a ballot on primary day. The state has an open primary, so voters can select which party primary they want to participate in before they vote.ย
Polls closed in the Hawkeye State at 8 p.m. Central Daylight Time.ย
It’s a competitive primary field for the U.S. Senate in Iowa, after incumbent Republican Sen. Joni Ernst announced she would not seek re-election.ย
Trump has endorsed Rep. Ashley Hinson as Ernst’s replacement. A former news anchor who once worked as a camera operator and editor for WOI, Hinson has been in office since 2021 after defeating the incumbent Democrat in a competitive district that includes Cedar Rapids. She faces former state Sen. Jim Carlin in Tuesday’s primary.
“I know Ashley well, and she is a winner,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday night.
On the Democratic side, a race between two candidates looking to bring an end to the Republican grip on Hawkeye State politics, with sate Rep. Josh Turek facing state Sen. Zach Wahls. Although polling initially showed Wahls in the lead, Turek has been consistently ahead since April.ย
Once a competitive state for Democrats, Iowa has shifted increasingly toward the Republican Party, with Trump winning the state in three consecutive elections. The last time a Democrat was elected to the U.S. Senate from Iowa was in 2008.ย
Hinson’s second congressional district is among the four seats with competitive races.ย
Democrats are looking at the Hawkeye State as an opportunity to gain ground in the U.S. House, with several seats considered swing districts.ย
Among them is Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, which Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks won by only 800 votes in the 2024 General Election.ย
The Republican primary field is competitive, as the party looks to continue its hold on the governor’s mansion in Des Moines.ย
Trump and Ernst endorsed Rep. Randy Feenstra, whose district includes Sioux City and Council Bluffs, in the race. Although farmer Zach Lahn has managed to keep the race competitive, debating Feenstra in April.ย
Other Republican candidates in the race are former state Rep. Brad Sherman and sitting state Rep. Eddie Andrews.ย
On the Democratic side, state auditor Rob Sand has already shored up his party’s nomination with no other candidates qualifying for the primary.ย
The last time a Democrat was elected as governor of Iowa was in 2006.ย
Montanaย
Primary elections will take place in Montana to decide the candidates for U.S. Senate and U.S. House, among other races.ย
There are no runoff elections in Montana, meaning the person with the most votes advances to the general election in November. Voters are free to choose the day of which party’s primary they would like to cast a vote in.
Polls close in Montana at 8 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time on Tuesday.
Trump has backed U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme after Sen. Steve Daines, the two-term Republican incumbent, abruptly exited the race before the filing deadline in March. Alme, who also has Daines’ endorsement, is running against mechanical engineer Lee Calhoun and Charles Walking Child.ย
On the Democratic side, State Rep. Reilly Neill and tribal historic preservation officer Michael Black Wolf are among the candidates running.ย
However, it’s actually independent candidate Seth Bodnar, the former president of the University of Montana, who has managed to acquire support from major political figures within the Democratic Party, including former Sen. Jon Tester, who served on Capitol Hill from 2007 to 2015. As an independent candidate, Bodnar will not appear on the primary ballot but will instead appear as a candidate in the general election.
Although considered a Republican stronghold in presidential elections, Montana elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate as recently as 2018. Tester lost his reelection to Tim Sheehy in 2024. In fact, Democrats controlled both Senate seats and the governor’s mansion in Big Sky Country as recently as 2015.ย
New Jersey
Primary elections took place in New Jersey to decide the candidates for U.S. Senate and U.S. House, among other races.ย
Unaffiliated voters selected whichever party primary they wanted to cast a vote in on Tuesday. However, those who previously registered to one party in the Garden State cast a vote in that party Tuesday. The deadline to switch party affiliation was April 8.ย
Polls closed at 8 p.m. ET in New Jersey.ย
Incumbent U.S. Sen. Cory Booker has already effectively secured the Democratic nomination as the party’s presumptive nominee. Booker is seeking re-election to his third term in the U.S. Senate.ย
On the Republican side, candidates include physician Robert Lebovics, state trooper Richard Tabor and former News 12 reporter Alex Zdan.
A solidly Democratic state, New Jersey voters last elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 1972.ย
New Mexico
Primary elections took place in New Mexico to decide the candidates for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, governor, lieutenant governor and secretary of state, among other races.ย
Unaffiliated voters can select whichever party primary they would like to cast a ballot for on Tuesday. However, in New Mexico, those who have previously registered to one party must cast a vote for that party on Tuesday. The deadline to change party affiliation passed on May 28.ย
Polls closed in New Mexico at 7 p.m. Mountain Time.ย
In the race for governor, Deb Haaland, who served as secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior under Biden, is facing off against Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman for the Democratic nomination. Polls show Haaland as the heavy favorite in the race.ย
Incumbent Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is ineligible to seek re-election for a third consecutive term, having been in office since 2019.ย
On the Republican side, Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull, businessman Doug Turner and former state human services Secretary Duke Rodriguez will all compete Tuesday. Polls show a close race between Hull and Turner for the nomination.
Historically, New Mexico has alternated between Republicans and Democrats for the governor’s mansion. Before Lujan Grisham served two terms in office, Republican Susana Martinez also served two terms as governor.ย
U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Lujan is seeking the Democratic nomination for a second term in that chamber. Lujan’s only opposition for his party’s nomination comes from U.S. Air Force veteran Matt Dodson from Farmington. Polls show incumbent Lujan as the heavy favorite.ย
For the Republican Party, no candidate has qualified to appear on the ballot. Larry Marker has campaigned as a write-in candidate. Third-party candidates from the Libertarian and Forward parties will appear on their respective parties’ ballots.ย
An increasingly Democratic state, the last time a Republican was elected to the U.S. Senate from New Mexico was in 2002.ย
South Dakota
Primary elections took place in South Dakota to decide the candidates for U.S. Senate and U.S. House and governor, among other races.
South Dakota holds runoff elections for the governor and U.S. House elections if no candidate secures more than 35% of the vote, which could come into play in this year’s highly competitive Republican primary for governor. If needed, a runoff will be held on July 28.ย
Divided between Central and Mountain time zones, South Dakota polls closed at 7 p.m. local time.ย
The competition for the Republican primary election in South Dakota is crowded. Incumbent Larry Rhoden, who became governor after Kristi Noem resigned to become U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, faces challenges from other state officials. State Rep. Jon Hansen, who is the Speaker of the South Dakota House of Representatives, and Rep. Dusty Johnson, from the state’s only U.S. House seat, are both looking to replace Rhoden as governor. Also in the mix is Toby Doeden, a real estate developer.ย
Polls show a close race between Doeden, Hansen, Johnson and Rhoden in Tuesday’s primary.ย
On the Democratic side, former State Sen. Daniel Ahlers has already effectively secured the party nomination as the presumptive nominee for governor, with no other candidates qualifying.
South Dakota has not elected a Democrat as governor since 1972. ย
Sen. Mike Rounds is seeking a third term in office in his bid for the Republican Party nomination. Polls show him as the heavy favorite against Navy veteran Justin McNeal. Trump has endorsed him. ย
Democrat Julian Beaudion, who was once a South Dakota state trooper, has effectively secured his party’s nomination for Senate as the presumptive nominee.ย
A heavily Republican state, the last time a Democrat was elected to the U.S. Senate in South Dakota was in 2008.
