Lindian Resources has confirmed its flagship Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi is clear for take-off, reaffirming that its export position remains unchanged as development of the operations site progresses towards first production late 2026.

The company says following high-level engagement in the African nation, the Malawian Government has reiterated its position that Lindian’s plan to beneficiate its ore into a monazite concentrate in-country before export remains unaffected by a 2025 Presidential executive order relating to the export of raw minerals.

Lindian Resources executive director Zac Komur with the Honourable Minister of Mining, Thoko Tembo, during a Kangankunde site tour on 23 September 2026.

Lindian says the African nation’s Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA) provided written clarification as far back as October 2025 that Kangankunde would not be affected by the executive order, recognising that producing a monazite concentrate in Malawi before export would deliver a definitive value-add to state revenue and local jobs.

The clarification provides a stable platform for Lindian as it barrels towards a year-end production target, against a backdrop of soaring global demand for rare earths. The market is currently wrestling with structural shortages as geopolitical tensions keep supply concentrated, while demand from the electric vehicle, renewable energy and defence sectors continues to rise.

‘Further processing needs a sound technical and commercial foundation, and we are ready to work with Government and industry.’

Lindian Resources executive chairman Robert Martin

With the world scrambling to build new supply chains for critical minerals outside of China, any project such as Kangankunde that can demonstrate a clear and permitted path to production is likely to attract significant attention.

The government’s affirmation effectively douses a brief wave of market jitters that saw short-sellers target the stock over perceived regulatory risks. Industry analysts note that the panic was entirely disconnected from Lindian’s underlying corporate realities. By moving quickly to engage directly with government officials on the ground, Lindian management has shown Kangankunde’s regulatory runway remains entirely intact, reducing the market’s nervous chatter to mere white noise.

Lindian’s stage one project development is fully funded through to first production, with mining having already started and major construction works said to be well advanced.

The company’s executive chairman, Robert Martin and executive director, Zac Komur, are currently in Malawi to engage directly with government bodies, including the President and the Ministry of Mining.

Lindian Resources executive chairman Robert Martin said: “Our focus is on completing Kangankunde and delivering the benefits of an operating rare earths mine for Malawi and our shareholders. The MMRA’s existing clarification recognises the value addition we are building in Malawi and supports the export of our beneficiated monazite concentrate under the current framework.”

Separate to the government’s acknowledgement of Kangankunde’s importance to Malawi’s economy, fresh beneficiation regulations and legislative amendments have recently been tabled as part of broader plans to tighten up the country’s mining laws.

However, Lindian says the country’s Mining Minister has made it clear the proposals remain just that rather than settled government policy. The consultation window runs until October 10, with Lindian set to submit a technical and commercial position paper alongside a united industry submission with other listed miners operating in Malawi.

Martin says Lindian is keen to assist as Malawi weighs up its early thoughts on downstream processing, with the company ready to work alongside government and industry to see what makes commercial and technical sense.

Kangankunde is already doing plenty of heavy lifting in-country. Its stage one flowsheet will crush and grind the ore before gravity concentration and magnetic separation upgrade it into a premium monazite concentrate. It is a proven step in the rare earths value chain beyond direct shipping ore and gives Lindian a strong launch pad to explore whether taking processing another step downstream in Malawi could stack up.

The positive engagement was underscored by a recent site visit from Malawi’s Minister of Mining, the Honourable Thoko Tembo, who said he was impressed with the progress being made on site. He said that while significant progress has already been made, the project’s greatest contribution to Malawi is expected to come as it moves through commissioning into production.

The big-picture narrative for Malawi is the nation’s massive economic pivot. Malawi’s economy has historically relied on agriculture for around 80 per cent of its export earnings. Lindian’s Kangankunde mine represents a generational swing toward a $30 billion mineral boom for the country, positioning the stable East African nation as a key player in the Western-aligned critical minerals supply chain.

With the regulatory framework seemingly settled, funding secured and construction of its mine and plant well underway, Lindian appears to have a clear runway to its target of first production in late 2026. As it rounds the corner into the final straight, the company looks well placed to deliver a new, much-needed source of rare earths into a hungry global market.
