Critical Resources has landed management on-site in Suriname to fast-track due diligence across two recently secured gold projects, giving the company a rare ASX-listed foothold in a jurisdiction that is quietly becoming a hotspot for global gold capital.

The company says it’s advancing legal and technical reviews of the Gonini and Greenstars projects, meeting with vendors, local communities and key officials while also assembling a field crew to plan its first field programs. The meetings are designed to ensure that exploration can start as soon as the conditions of the contract for its new tenure are satisfied.

Together Critical’s projects cover 199 square kilometres of granted gold mining rights in the South American nation’s prolific Guiana Shield. The ASX junior will hold a 90 per cent interest in the projects once the deals are completed.

To get a head start, the company has engaged specialist consultants GexplOre to run a major structural and geophysical interpretation of key controls on mineralisation at Gonini and Greenstars, as well as the 6000 square- kilometres of the surrounding greenstone belt. GexplOre is no stranger to the region, having provided structural insights for G Mining Ventures’ impressive Oko West project in Guyana and Founders Metals’ Antino project in Suriname.

‘Suriname is a relatively unknown but proven gold jurisdiction and is attracting capital from some of the world’s leading gold investors.’

Critical Resources managing director Tim Wither

There is good reason for the growing interest in Suriname’s goldfields. Gold is the country’s economic powerhouse, generating US$2 billion (A$2.86 billion) in production earnings in 2024 and accounting for almost 80 per cent of its total exports.

That kind of output has not gone unnoticed. In just the last few months, the region has seen a flurry of corporate activity. Gold giant Gold Fields completed a C$77 million (A$77.36M) investment into explorer Founders Metals in September to grab a 19.9 per cent stake. Meanwhile, private investment house La Mancha has also taken 19.9 per cent positions in both Miata Metals and Greenheart Gold, two other Canadian-listed explorers active in Suriname.

It follows Zijin Mining’s US$360 million (A$515M) acquisition of the Rosebel gold mine in 2023, an operation that produced more than 5.65 million ounces of gold between 2004 and 2021.

Geologically, the Guiana Shield is considered the underexplored South American counterpart to West Africa’s phenomenally rich Birimian Shield. The two landmasses are believed to have been joined before the Atlantic Ocean opened up. While the Birimian belts host more than 500 million ounces of discovered gold, the Guiana Shield holds a still-impressive inventory of more than 100 million ounces, suggesting plenty of room for new discoveries.

Against this backdrop, Critical’s two projects appear to be in a great strategic neighbourhood.

The larger of the two, the 164-square-kilometre Gonini project, lies in the historic Sara Creek district within the Marowijne greenstone belt, 66km from Newmont’s multi-million-ounce Merian gold mine. While gold has been mined in the district for 150 years, the company says there is no record of modern systematic exploration on its tenure.

The second asset, the 35-square-kilometre Greenstars project, sits 35km west of Zijin’s monster Rosebel mine. It has road access from the capital, Paramaribo, and contains active small-scale alluvial workings, confirming the presence of gold in the local system.

Critical Resources managing director Tim Wither said: “Suriname is a relatively unknown but proven gold jurisdiction, and is attracting serious capital from some of the world’s leading gold investors. In a matter of weeks, we have secured exclusivity over two granted gold projects, and we are now on the ground. This visit lets us meet our vendors and local communities first-hand, and set up the field programs, with a crew being organised to mobilise in the coming weeks, subject to finalisation.”

The company says it will also continue to actively assess further opportunities in Suriname to hopefully expand its potential 199 square-kilometre footprint.

While the Suriname move marks a significant new venture, it adds another string to Critical’s already diversified bow. The company holds the Mavis Lake lithium project in Canada, which hosts an eight-million-tonne resource grading 1.07 per cent lithium oxide.

In New South Wales, it has a foothold in the Halls Peak base metals project, with an inferred resource of 840,000 tonnes at 3.7 per cent zinc and 1.5 per cent lead. The company also has interests in battery technology IP and a suite of gold, antimony and tungsten prospects in New Zealand.

With majors already operating in-country and cashed-up explorers now moving in, Critical looks to be staking its claim in a region that is quickly achieving top form. As one of the only ASX-listed companies with granted gold tenure in Suriname, it appears to be offering a ground-floor entry into what could be one of the world’s next great gold provinces.
