In a bid to promote itself as option for premium travellers, Western Sydney Airport has revealed details of its international lounge one week before commercial flights are scheduled to start.

The 80-seat mezzanine-level facility, set to open next month, will initially serve Singapore Airlines passengers travelling through Australia’s newest airport.

Designed by COX Architecture, The Rayleigh Lounge aims to establish the airport’s credentials with the all-important sector premium traveller, passengers willing to pay more for front-of-cabin seating, better food, and higher quality flying experiences.

Digitally rendered images provided by the airport show the space featuring dedicated seating and dining areas, a bar, an open kitchen, and three private shower suites to support the needs of solo travellers, families, and groups.

WSI is the first new full-scale international airport to open in Australia in over half a century. It will begin serving domestic passengers on October 25 when Jetstar launches operations, followed by Air New Zealand’s first international flight the next day.

Singapore Airlines flights connecting WSI to Singapore Changi Airport will begin on November 23, by which time the lounge – operated by air services provider dnata – is scheduled to open.

“Ahead of our inaugural flight, we are working closely with our airport partners to deliver a seamless, premium ground experience for our customers,” said Singapore Airlines regional vice president Foo Chai Woo. “We look forward to welcoming travellers at Western Sydney International Airport and introducing them to the world-class service for which Singapore Airlines is known.”

Singapore Airlines, second only to Qantas in the number of international flights service Australia, won the Skytrax 2026 World’s Best Airline award last month.

Premium travel, involving business class seats (and above) as well as priority boarding and luxurious lounges, has emerged as a growing, and profitable segment for aviation sector, following the end of the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2022. Australia’s existing capital city airports, including Sydney Kingsford Smith, have extensive dedicated airlines lounges.

The bar. The mezzanine-level lounge will initially accommodate 80 people.

In keeping with the airport’s western Sydney location, the design of the WSI international lounge has been selected to reflect the colours of the surrounding Cumberland Plain and Blue Mountains.

“From the moment passengers walk in, we want them to see and feel that they’re in Western Sydney,” said COX Architecture partner Brooke Lloyd. With its location on the mezzanine level, the lounge will offer views across the airfield to the Blue Mountains.

While the airport expects modest traffic initially, its infrastructure is built to scale up as demand increases. The airport’s curfew-free schedule is expected to spur competition with Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, even as WSI’s initial focus centres heavily on leisure travel and visiting friends and relatives.

WSI chief executive Simon Hickey noted that as more airlines join WSI and passenger numbers grow, The Rayleigh Lounge will expand alongside them. The international lounge “will open ahead of the holiday period, giving our international travellers an outstanding start to their journey from Western Sydney to the world,” he said.

At 80 seats, the lounge is roughly half the size of a standard airline lounge in a major hub. However, plans are in place to expand its capacity to 130 seats as foot traffic grows.

Fiji Airways will fly to Western Sydney International, Australia’s newest airport.

“It’s good to see they have allowed room to expand and almost double the lounge’s footprint,” Executive Traveller editor-in-chief David Flynn told this masthead, “because that could be needed as more international airlines join the WSI roster”.

Singapore Airlines will initially operate an Airbus A350 featuring 40 business class seats on the route. “Given the lounge has an 80-seat capacity, if every business class seat is sold, the lounge will already be at 50 per cent capacity,” Flynn noted. Access will be available to Singapore Airlines business class passengers, as well as KrisFlyer Gold, Star Alliance Gold, and PPS Club members.

“I wouldn’t say the lounge would be empty by any stretch, but it’s certainly not going to be standing room only at this stage,” said Flynn.

Dnata director Burt Sigsworth said his company will bring “dnata’s international experience in airport hospitality and food service to The Rayleigh Lounge, while working with local producers to give the offering a strong connection to Western Sydney.”

The highly anticipated $6 billion airport will launch services with Qantas, Jetstar, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, VietJet, and Fiji Airways. At launch, Jetstar will operate up to 14 weekly flights between Western Sydney and Melbourne, daily flights to the Gold Coast (increased from four weekly to meet demand), and three weekly flights to Brisbane.
