Charlotte City Councilman Tariq Bokhari resigns to join the Trump administration as deputy administrator of the FTA.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ After nearly eight years of public service, Charlotte City Councilman Tariq Bokhari announced his resignation at his final town hall meeting as he prepares for a position in the Trump administration.
“I am resigning from city council,” Bokhari said at the event. “I have accepted the position of deputy administrator of the FTA.”
As he prepares for his new role at the Federal Transit Administration, Bokhari expressed hope that his District 6 will continue addressing what he considers the area’s most pressing challenges.
“Infrastructure and public safety are my top two concerns,” Bokhari said.
The outgoing councilman warned against complacency regarding crime in his district, noting that despite higher crime rates in other parts of Charlotte, District 6 still faces “a substantial amount of property crimes.”
Bokhari also highlighted what he described as a significant imbalance in infrastructure investment, a persistent concern throughout his tenure.
“District 6 pays over 25 percent of property tax basis that funds this entire city, but in my last eight years, we got less than two percent of infrastructure capital spend back,” he said.
Reflecting on his time in office, Bokhari expressed gratitude for his years of public service.
“I’m looking back on that now โ what a journey it’s been, a lot of great experiences over the last seven and a half years,” Bokhari said.
Though he’s transitioning to the federal government, Bokhari emphasized his continued support for Charlotte, acknowledging that “there is still lots of work left to be done” in the city.
The city council has not yet announced plans for filling Bokhari’s seat.
