CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Groups in Charlotte said they are planning a rally at the Charlotte Government Center on Monday, demanding the Trump administration stand down the National Guard at ICE protests in Los Angeles, California.ย
The rally is being organized by 32BJ SEIU and Housing Justice Coalition CLT. They are calling for an end to ICE raids targeting immigrant workers and their communities, the groups said in a statement.
The rally in Charlotte comes as protests intensify in Los Angeles after President Donald Trumpย deployed hundreds of National Guard troops.ย
In Charlotte, rally organizers are also calling for the release of David Huerta, president of SEIU California and SEIU United Service Workers West, from federal detention. Huerta was arrested at an ICE raid in Los Angeles Friday while “exercising his First Amendment right to observe and document law enforcement activity,” they said.
“The North Carolina event echoes actions across the nation in a show of solidarity with Los Angeles’ working communities, which are experiencing what organizers describe as an ongoing assault from ICE and the Trump Administration,” organizers said.ย
