Despite facing a significant projected decline in sales tax revenue, County Manager Matt Rhoten has proposed a balanced budget that keeps the property tax rate flat at 59.9 cents per $100 of assessed value.ย
Thatโs the lowest rate in Gaston County since at least 1970, offering some relief to homeowners during a time of widespread inflation.
To make that possible, the county worked with departments across the organization to reduce operating budgets by more than 6% and delay certain capital projects. Those cost-saving efforts helped offset nearly $31 million in new expenses, largely driven by inflation and school bond debt payments.
If the budget is approved, Gaston County Schools would receive a $500,000 increase in operating support to help enhance local teacher salary supplements. Gaston College is also set to receive an additional $250,000 in funding.
But while those increases provide near-term support for staff and students, aging school buildings remain a major concern.ย
The proposed budget includes over $16 million in new debt payments related to the final round of the $250 million school bonds approved by voters in 2018 โ funds that are earmarked for renovations.ย
However, county leaders estimate that long-term school facility needs still exceed $600 million.
Despite financial pressures, the budget preserves funding for key community services such as the Gaston County Family Justice Center, the public library system, and the Gaston County Museum of Art & History.
It also recommends funding 10 new county positions and maintains employee benefits.
Looking ahead, Rhoten said the county remains committed to improving efficiency while continuing to deliver high-quality services to residents.
Residents will have a chance to speak during the public hearing at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Gaston County Administration Building.ย
If adopted, the new budget would take effect July 1.
