CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Heal Charlotte, a nonprofit supporting housing stability and after-school programs, will be advocating for families forced to leave transitional housing after safety concerns ended the program at a press conference at the Charlotte Government Center at 5:30 p.m. Monday evening.ย
This press conference is following a series of events, starting with a mother and child found dead at the hotel on June 6.ย
The hotel was housing residents from nonprofitsย Heal Charlotte and Heal Empower Love Protect (HELP). Both Heal and HELP owned a lease with the hotel for their programs.ย
However, after the death of the mother and child and an assault that went uninvestigated by the police, HELP CEO Cedric Dean announced in a press release the program and its participants would be leaving the hotel due to “public safety challenges, including drug activity, gun violence, and security threats.”
The residents were made to leave by Friday, June 20.ย
Heal Charlotte is holding the press conference for the families and program participants who have been displaced after the ending of the program. Heal is asking for immediate assistance, a stabilization center to prevent future harm and transparency from the city and Mecklenburg county officials.ย
Heal Charlotte asks supporters to wear black in support of displaced residents.ย
