President Jimmy Carter has been lying in repose at the Carter Center since Saturday evening.
ATLANTA โ More than 10,000 people have come through the doors of the Carter Center in Atlanta to pay tribute to President Jimmy Carter since he began lying in repose Saturday evening, the organization said.
The state funeral process for the 39th president began on Saturday, with his remains traveling from Plains, Georgia to Atlanta, stopping for ceremonies at his boyhood farm and the Georgia State Capitol on both ends of the journey before arriving at the Carter Center.
A memorial service was then held at the Carter Center, and President Carter began lying in repose at the center. He will continue to do so until 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning, at which point he will be transported to Washington, D.C.ย
He will be honored in the nation’s capital first by lying in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, which will last through Thursday morning, and then with a National Funeral Service that day at the National Cathedral.
After the services in Washington on Thursday, President Carter will return home to Plains for a final private funeral and interment at his home. He will be buried next to his wife of 77 years, First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
Visitation at the Carter Center in Atlanta will continue with 24-hour availability through Tuesday morning. For more information on how to go pay your respects, see this story.
