Rep. Joe Wilson wants a $250 bill featuring Donald Trump, but a federal law banning living people on U.S. currency could block the plan.
COLUMBIA, S.C. โ South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson is pushing to put President Donald Trump on a new $250 bill, but a long-standing federal law banning living people from U.S. currency could stand in the way.
Wilson is working on legislation that would direct the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing to design a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump.
“Most valuable bill for most valuable President!” Wilson wrote on X.ย
According to Wilsonโs policy advisor, the proposed bill would commemorate the nationโs 250th anniversary in 2026 while also recognizing what they describe as Trumpโs efforts in battling inflation under the Biden administration. They also want to highlight the idea that Americans should not have to carry large quantities of cash when they go to the grocery store.ย
However, a long-standing federal law could pose a challenge. A provision passed in 1866 prohibits living individuals from appearing on U.S. currency. Wilsonโs office stated that his legislation would address this issue, though details on how remain unclear.
Right now, the highest denomination bill printed by the United States is the $100 bill, so that would also have to be adjusted.ย
The proposal is currently in the early drafting stages, and it is uncertain whether it will gain traction in Congress.ย
Wilson, a Republican from Lexington, has represented South Carolina’s Second Congressional District since 2001. The district includes parts of Columbia, the state capital, as well as much of Lexington County and other areas in central South Carolina. Before his time in Congress, Wilson served 17 years in the South Carolina Senate. His son is South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson.ย
