RALEIGH, N.C. โ Gov.-elect Josh Stein was officially sworn in as North Carolina’s 76th governor Wednesday, replacing Roy Cooper as the state’s top executive.ย
Stein, who served as attorney general, defeated Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson in November’s general election to succeed Cooper, who attended Wednesday’s ceremony. A public inauguration ceremony for Stein and other statewide officials is set for Jan. 11 in Raleigh.ย
“I know that your passion for helping people burns bright and you have the smarts, the integrity and the grit to serve them well,” Cooper said. “This job is about leadership, and you, Gov. Stein, are a strong and effective leader. I will sleep well tonight knowing that I am your constituent and you are my governor.”ย
Cooper officially transferred his power as North Carolina’s governor to Stein during Wednesday’s ceremony.ย
“I accept this great seal of the state of North Carolina and the power and duties it represents,” Stein said. “May we all, working together, be a beacon of hope and progress for our nation.”

Stein emphasized the importance still in front of the state’s government to help the people of western North Carolina, vowing to act with urgency.ย
Stein’s Cabinet appointees โ likely 11 in all โ will be subject to confirmation by the state Senate. Since a 2016 law that laid out the confirmation process, the Senate has rejected only one Cabinet appointee โ Dionne Delli-Gatti as environment secretary in 2021.
“It’s exciting to launch 2025 this morning, and I could not imagine a better group to do it with,” Stein said during his remarks. “To my staff, I am so grateful for all that you do … To the people of North Carolina, thank you for putting your trust in me.”ย
