“We can just do this now!” the marshmallow sandwich company said in a satirical statement.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. โ For Americans who haven’t looked at a map recently, there are some important changes to keep up with. The Gulf of Mexico is now the Gulf of America, Denali is back to Mount McKinley and Florida is now MoonPieTown.
At least according to one particular marshmallow sandwich company.
The folks at MoonPie, the famous chocolate-dipped dessert by Chattanooga Bakery, Inc., issued an official statement announcing the name change this week.
“Thanks to recent geographical updates, we are excited to announce that the land mass previously known as Florida will now be referred to as MoonPieTown,” the statement on X reads, in part.
The post appears to be poking fun at President Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico โ one of the first executive orders he signed on Day 1 in office.
Some supporters, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis โ MoonPieTown Gov. Ron DeSantis, if you will โ were quick to embrace the Gulf of America name change. But others wondered if Trump even had the authority to rename a body of water that isn’t owned by the United States.
As it turns out, the president can change how the gulf is referred to within the U.S., but he can’t force other countries to honor the new name. However, the jury is still out on whether MoonPie has the same authority.
“‘But Florida is a state,’ you say. No, Florida was a state. Now it’s MoonPieTown. We can just do this now!” the company’s statement continued.
It may be best just to take the company’s advice and “don’t think too much about it.”
If it wasn’t clear, the folks behind the MoonPie social media accounts are known for posting unfiltered, hilarious takes. And historically, they haven’t shied away from playful political commentary. BuzzFeed News even wrote anย article back in 2017 about the “hysterically weird Twitter account.”
