Now, it goes to the House.
NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The North Carolina Senate passed a bill on Wednesday that would put stricter rules on school calendars.
Right now, state law requires schools to start on the Monday closest to August 26th.
However, it’s rarely enforced and some districts ignore it.
For example, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools started two weeks earlier this school year, and plans to do so again in the fall.
The new bill would allow for more flexibility, but would also add stricter penalties.
School could start on either the Monday closest to August 26th or August 19th.
If a district doesn’t listen, it risks losing central office funding. The bill also opens school districts up to lawsuits for not following along.
It had bipartisan support in the Senate. It now goes to the House. If it passes, it wouldn’t take effect until the 2026-27 school year.
