Tired of long DMV waits? North Carolina’s new real-time wait time tool helps you pick the best time and location to visit.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ North Carolina drivers frustrated by unpredictable and often extremely long waits at driver’s license offices now have a new resource: a real-time wait time tool on the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles website.
The tool displays one of three status indicators for each office statewide. The indicators tell users whether an office is accepting walk-ins and appointments, has longer-than-expected wait times or has reached its capacity. Estimated wait times, based on real-time data such as the number of active terminals and customers in line, appear as a range after a customer checks in and receives a ticket.
“This new transparency tool is a significant step forward in improving the customer experience,” NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine said. “By giving people the ability to check wait times and capacity before heading out, we’re helping them use their time more effectively, reduce unnecessary travel, and avoid frustration.”

Gov. Josh Stein said the tool allows North Carolinians to handle DMV business on their own schedules.
“Whether they’re renewing a license or getting a new ID, we want drivers to get on with their day as quickly as possible,” Stein said.
The DMV noted that many offices statewide are seeing lower wait times in the afternoons. Officials emphasized that displayed wait times are estimates and can vary based on service type and real-time volume.
