State lawmakers filed a bill on Wednesday proposing to raise the maximum speed limit on interstate highways in North Carolina from 70 miles per hour to 75 miles per hour.ย

License suspension rules would face changes under the new bill.ย
According to the bill, a driverโs license may be suspended for driving over 85 miles per hour in a 75 miles per hour zone and courts may grant a limited driving privilege under certain circumstances.ย
The billโs new rules and penalties for speeding will only apply to violations that happen on or after Dec. 1, 2025. Any violations that happen before that date will be handled under existing laws.
