Tax season has officially begun in North Carolina.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Tax season is officially underway in North Carolina. The Department of Revenue announced Monday that it is now accepting 2025 state income tax returns.ย
The deadline to file in North Carolina is April 15, the same as the IRS. Several new tax laws are in effect this year, including President Donald Trump’s One Big, Beautiful Bill, which could impact federal taxes, credits and deductions.ย
NCDOT says it must process all tax returns to identify potential identity theft and fraud before issuing any refunds. Once processing begins, the โWhereโs My Refundโ application will be available on the NCDOR website.ย
Many Americans may get a bigger refund than expected, too. The Treasury Department says millions of Americans could be in line for a boost this tax season because they didn’t adjust their withholdings after recent tax breaks.ย
A new law increases the standard deduction by $750 and doubles that for married couples. It also expands state and local tax deductions and gives a new break to some seniors.ย
Returns are expected to average around $1,000 more per household this year, officials say.ย
Tax experts, including the IRSโ independent watchdog, have warned that this year’s filing season could be hampered by the loss of tens of thousands of tax collection workers who left the agency through planned layoffs and buyouts spurred by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
