Mueller was appointed in 2017 to investigate alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, including potential ties to Donald Trump’s successful presidential campaign and his associates.ย
Mueller was appointed by Republican President George W. Bush to serve as the director of the FBI roughly a week before the 9/11 attacks in 2001, and was with the agency until 2013.ย
During his tenure, he is credited with helping transform the bureau’s top priority from solving domestic crimes to preventing terrorism.ย
Trump posted on social media about Muellerโs death: โRobert Mueller just died. Good, Iโm glad heโs dead.โ The Republican president added, โHe can no longer hurt innocent people!โ
