Why could this race be a major one on the national stage?
With Republican Senator Thom Tillis stepping aside, North Carolinaโs Senate seat is expected to be one of the most closely watched races in the country. The state is a battleground with a history of tight statewide elections, and both parties are likely to invest heavily.
Political analysts have described the open seat as a key opportunity for Democrats. At the same time, Republicans may see Tillisโ retirement as a chance to rally behind a new nominee.
The outcome of the Democratic primary will shape the fall matchup โ and could play a role in determining which party controls the U.S. Senate.
