COLUMBIA, S.C. โ South Carolina State Representative R.J. May has been arrested and booked at the Lexington County jail.
May, 38, ย was taken there Wednesday. ย At this time, it’s unclear exactly why he was brought there or what charges he might face.ย
News19 reached out to both the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and neither gave comment. ย There is also no record of any indictments or warrants at this time.ย
May has represented House District 88 in Lexington County since 2021. He’s a founding member of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus, a more conservative faction of Republican lawmakers at the State House, and at one time served as its vice-chair.ย
May was just reelected in November 2024 after facing no opposition in the primary or general election.ย
