At the initial meeting held last Thursday, Jan 30., representatives from the town of Davidson and the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) presented three potential sites under consideration:
-
Site A is land owned by the town and itโs the preferred location for the new rail station. Itโs north of Griffith Street near the proposed location of the townโs new Fire Station 1.
-
Site B would have the new rail station built at Sadler Square โ a privately owned area currently under renovation for new mixed-use buildings and a parking deck.
-
Site C is at the Linden Mill Building on Jackson Street in a historic part of Davidson.
Red Line potential rail station sites
Jason Burdette, Davidsonโs planning director, emphasized the importance of accessibility, financial benefits, land use and more in the selection process.ย
โIs the station located on a site that is easy for both cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians to access? Thatโs really important,” Burdette stated. “Does the town or taxpayer directly benefit from the station location through a sale or lease to CATS?โย
At the upcoming public information sessions, the same information will be presented and there will be opportunities for live polling, offering feedback and asking questions. The Feb. 6 session is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, while the Feb. 12 session will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ada Jenkins Center.
The Red Line project remains in its design update phase, with the town of Davidson’s final decision on the stationโs location and cost estimates expected by this spring.
