Vice president, EPA administrator to tour steel manufacturing facility in Lowcountry
COLUMBIA, S.C. โ Vice President JD Vance and Lee Zeldin, administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPS) are scheduled to visit a steel manufacturing plant in the South Carolina Lowcountry on Thursday, May 1.
The two men will be touring and delivering remarks at Nucor Steel Berkeley, near the Huger community, about 34 miles north of Charleston. Vance and Zeldin will be highlighting “America’s manufacturing renaissance during the first one hundred days of the Trump Administration.”
South Carolina GOP Chairman Drew McKissick released a statement saying, “We are thrilled to welcome Vice President JD Vance to the Palmetto State as the Trump Administration marks its first 100 days in office. This administration has set a bold new standard for leadership: securing our border, banning DEI policies, protecting womenโs sports, lowering inflation, and much more. And thatโs just scratching the surface of the Promises Made, Promises Kept agenda that President Trump and Vice President Vance are delivering.”
In May 2024, Nucor Steel Berkeley broke ground on a $425 million expansion project, adding a new galvanizing line at the sheet still mill. The Berkely mill uses a recycling-based steelmaking process to manufacture flat-rolled steel that goes toward the production of car parts and indoor/outdoor appliances and more; and steel beams used for support in buildings and bridges. Nucor has nine locations in South Carolina.
