CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster were among 10 state leaders appointed Wednesday to President Donald Trump’s Council of Governors, marking historic representation for the Carolinas on the national security advisory panel.
Stein, a Democrat, will serve as co-chair alongside Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a Republican. He becomes the second North Carolina governor appointed to the council since its creation in 2010, following former Gov. Bev Perdue. McMaster, a Republican, is South Carolina’s first governor to receive an appointment.
The bipartisan council, established by Congress in 2008, advises on matters relating to the National Guard, homeland defense, and civil support missions. Members work with federal officials to strengthen state-federal coordination on disaster response and military operations.
Other appointees include Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
The council’s membership reflects geographic and political diversity, with five Democrats and five Republicans representing states from the Northeast to the Deep South.
