Trump criticizes Senator Tillis on Truth Social for opposing the reconciliation bill, threatening to support challengers in the 2026 primaries.
NORTH CAROLINA, USA โ President Donald Trump took to the social platform Truth Social afterย Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis voted against the Senate reconciliation bill, also known as the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
In two posts, Trump targets the senator and said he plans to back candidates hoping to run against Tillis in the 2026 Republican primaries.
“Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis. I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America,” wrote Trump.
Tillis announced his decision to vote against the bill online and cited that the bill would hurt funding in North Carolina, including hospitals and rural areas.
“I will always do what is in the best interest of North Carolina, even when that puts me at odds with my own party,” wrote Tillis.
Tillis also stated he supported the rest of the bill, including tax cuts, increasing border security and eliminating “wasteful” spending.
Trump claimed Tillis’ actions would throw North Carolina’s tobacco industry “out the window”. He also accused Tillis of being “missing in action” during the events of Hurricane Helene.
The bill did clear a key vote in the Senate after Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson switched his vote to “yes.” It could be days before the Senate passes it, but it would have to go back to the House before it reaches Trump’s desk.
