A growing number of Democrats are calling for Noemโs impeachment in the wake of the killing of a Minnesota woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.
WASHINGTON D.C., DC โ A group of House Democrats have taken a step forward in their attempt to oust Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.ย
Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois spoke at a press conference Wednesday to introduce three articles of impeachment against Noem including obstruction of Congress, violation of public trust, and self-dealing.ย
Kelly accused Noem of willfully obstructing Congressional oversight and withholding Congressionally appropriated funds; compromising public safety, violating due process of American citizens, and directing “unconstitutional actions”; and abuse of office for personal benefit and “[steering] federal dollars to associates.”ย
“This is not a decision made lightly, but the pattern of Secretary Noem’s misconduct is undeniable,” Kelly said in a statement.ย
A growing number of Democrats are calling for Noem’s impeachment in the wake of the killing of a Minnesota woman, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.ย
Noem has repeatedly referred to the case as an act of domestic terrorism.ย
“You don’t get to change the facts because you don’t like them,” Noem said Sunday in a statement on X.ย “What happened in Minneapolis was an act of domestic terrorism. Acts of domestic terrorism like this should be condemned by every politician and elected official. It shouldn’t be hard or remotely controversial.” ย ย
Kelly said 70 Democrats so far have supported the impeachment effort as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Real people are being hurt and killed,” she added. “If we do nothing, nothing will happen.”ย
Kelly was joined by 10 other Democrats at Wednesday’s event who voiced frustration and anger with the Trump administration’s efforts.ย
Rep. Angie Craig, who represents a swing district in Minnesota, said ICE actions have “crossed a line.”
“Minnesotans, we want safe and secure borders. We want violent criminals to not be in our country. But this is not what we signed up for,” Craig said.ย
The impeachment effort is considered to be a longshot in the Republican-controlled House and Senate.ย
The House must approve the articles of impeachment by simple majority vote to charge a federal official before reaching the Senate for a trial. The Constitution requires a two-thirds vote of the Senate to convict, according to the United States Senate website.ย
