Since her announcement, local officials have begun responding to the news, with many offering well-wishes as she prepares to leave office.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden
โHolding an elected position in this current environment demands thoughtful consideration and the ability to balance a demanding professional and personal life. It can be even more demanding when you donโt always have honest and intentional support, which can put your mental health to the test daily. For some, itโs not worth the effort anymore.โ
Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera
“Mayor Vi Lylesโ announcement today marks a major moment for our city.
Public service at this level requires tremendous sacrifice, not just from the person serving, but from their family as well. I want to thank Mayor Lyles for her years of service to Charlotte and wish her and her family the very best in this next chapter.
Iโm keeping Mayor Lyles and her loved ones in my prayers during this transition.
Right now, my focus is on continuing the work residents expect from us โ keeping Charlotte safe, affordable, and moving forward in the right direction.
I know there will be many conversations ahead about the future leadership of our city, but today is really about acknowledging this moment and continuing to serve the people of Charlotte.”
Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory
“I want to thank Mayor Vi Lyles for her public service. As Mayor, she always represented our city with incredible maturity, professionalism and dignity at a time when those attributes were so critical from our city leadership. As a friend, I wish her nothing but the best!”
Former Charlotte City Councilman Tariq Scott Bokhari
“While we had many a battle over the years, I always had love for Mayor Vi Lyles, and I wish her nothing but the best as she transitions out of this role. This forces a big question out into the open much earlier than many were expecting to have to deal with it – who is going to be the next mayor?ย
It also offers an opportunity for the several contenders with interest to commit to not running in โ27 in exchange for being appointed to finish this term. Thereโs essentially 7 weeks for a council working to pass a budget (with a big tax increase) and address 77 tolls to also now decide who the next mayor will be. Grab your popcorn. We will break it all down and more on the next episode of of R&D in the NCโฆ stay tuned.”
Councilman JD Mazuera Arias
“I want to thank Mayor Vi Lyles for her years of service and leadership to the City of Charlotte. I respect her commitment to our community and the sacrifices that come with public service. Wishing her and her family the very best in this next chapter.”
