The competition watchdog is taking Grillโd to court for allegedly misleading customers about donating $1 for every burger purchased on โTree Day Tuesdaysโ for several years.
Grillโd ran a three-year campaign claiming that it would donate $1 for every burger purchase on Tuesdays to go towards planting trees.
However, the terms and conditions โ which required that the orders be placed by Grillโd loyalty members, for in-store dining, at the front counter, with a separate barcode scanned โ were so complicated that only 4 per cent actually qualified for a donation.
โWe allege Grillโd misled customers by overstating the extent of the donations it would make and the environmental contributions from its Tree Day Tuesday promotion. We consider this to be a form of greenwashing,โ said ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb.
โIn fact, only a small percentage of purchases on Tuesdays qualified for a donation by Grillโd because of the detailed conditions of the promotion, which we say were not disclosed or not adequately disclosed to customers.โ
More to come.
