Geelong coach Chris Scott has confirmed he expects to be coaching at the Cats until at least the end of his current contract, which expires in 2029, after being questioned about his future at his weekly media conference.
The question no one had on their mind arose after 3AWโs Rumour File aired a call on Tuesday morning speculating that the dual premiership coach would retire when the Catsโ current finals campaign ends.
Scott was surprised at the enquiry but made it clear he had no intention of walking away as the Cats are on the cusp of securing Port Adelaideโs Zak Butters and the Giantsโ Toby Greene in the upcoming trade period.
โI expect to see out my contract,โ Scott said.
Scott has been open in recent seasons about the demands of the job but has also been keen to emphasise that the good outweighs the bad.
He once again relayed his broad view of what life was like for senior coaches in the current environment but said any pitfalls were the โprice of admissionโ.
โI love parts of [the job] and I despise parts of it,โ Scott said.
โThe price of admission in the AFL is that some parts are going to be bloody hard, and some bits you are not going to be in love with, and some bits you just have to endure, to be frank.โ
Scott has coached the Cats since 2011, winning two premierships and leading them into 14 of the past 16 finals series. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Fremantle, the club his team will play in a semi-final on Friday night at Perthโs Optus Stadium.
The Cats will consider recalling Sam De Koning for the final, but Scott indicated midfielder James Worpel could be unavailable for the rest of the season with a troublesome hamstring.
Meanwhile, small forward Gryan Miers is continuing his remarkable run as he plays with a partial ACL tear. He said it took time before he decided to continue after initially booking in with a surgeon to have a reconstruction.
โIโm willing to fail with the opportunity to succeed,โ Miers said on Monday.
โSo Iโm really happy with the route Iโve taken: that if it goes wrong, and it still might, but that could be for different reasons, that could be because we just lose, I play bad, or another injury โ that Iโm OK with that because I think Iโve made the right decision.โ
He said there were no plans for him to have a reconstruction at seasonโs end.
