INDIAN LAND, S.C. โ A proposed mosque in a growing Lancaster County community is drawing mixed reactions from neighbors ahead of a key vote.
The five-acre project, planned for a residential area in Indian Land, has become the center of a broader conversation about growth, diversity, and neighborhood impact.
Some residents say they welcome the proposal and see it as a reflection of the areaโs changing population.
โI definitely celebrate that. We appreciate diversity,โ nearby resident Chris Butera said.
Others, however, are raising concerns about where the mosque would be located and how it could affect daily life.
โAs a neighbor, I donโt say itโs a good idea to put a mosque,โ Sai-Kumar Adike said. โSince thereโs not a lot of road, there would be a lot of trouble with traffic.
The proposed site sits in a low-density residential area, where neighbors say traffic is already becoming an issue as the region continues to expand.
Still, some community members argue that growth, and the challenges that come with it, is unavoidable.
โConstruction in the area is happening whether we want it or not. The area is booming,โ Butera said.
Last month, the Lancaster County Planning Commission voted to deny the permit, citing concerns about land use compatibility.
Now, the final decision rests with Lancaster County Council, which will take up the issue as debate continues across the community.
For some, the concern is about preserving the character of their neighborhood.
โSince itโs a very silent community and peaceful roads, we donโt want any disturbance here. We want to live in a peaceful way,โ Adike said.
Others say the focus should remain on inclusion.
โNo discrimination against anyone, from that side, no problem at all,โ Butera said.
The next vote is scheduled for Monday, May 11.
