Kurtley Beale has a chance to play for the Wallabies for the first time in five years after the 37-year-old was selected as a shock replacement for Hunter Paisami in Australia’s spring tour squad.

The improbable return of Beale, who last played for the Wallabies on the spring tour in 2021, came as his new Western Force teammate James Ramm also earned a call-up to the Wallabies squad for their four-Test tour of the UK in November.

The news of Beale’s recall to the Wallabies came hours after it was revealed the veteran had extended his contract with the Western Force, but only on a very modest, train-and-trial deal for the 2027 season.

Paisami was named in the spring tour squad last week but has since informed Wallabies coach Les Kiss he would be withdrawing due to personal reasons, having just moved to Japan with his wife and children to start with the Shizuoka Blue Revs.

Beale, who debuted for the Wallabies in 2009 and has played 95 Tests, will fly from Perth to meet the Wallabies in London next week. Australia’s main squad has gathered in Sydney and departs on Saturday.

It’s a remarkable return for Beale, who sat out the 2023 season after being charged with sexual assault. But after being acquitted in early 2024, he returned to rugby with the Force and was even named in Joe Schmidt’s first Wallabies squad.

However, an Achilles tendon injury suffered playing club rugby scuttled that chance of a Test comeback, but Beale returned again for the Force and has played solidly for the last two years. He was under consideration for the Australia A tour of the US but did not go due to visa issues.

If Beale gets another Test cap, he will become the third-oldest Wallaby since World War II, behind Greg Holmes and Tony Miller, who played at the same age of 38 years and 113 days.

Ramm has been called into the Wallabies squad after the 28-year-old signed for the Force earlier this year, following four seasons of strong form for Northampton in the English Premiership.

The speedy outside back – who plays both fullback and wing – has been playing for Northland in the New Zealand NPC competition for the last few months, and has been called in to bolster the Wallabies’ back three options.

It is not Ramm’s first time in a Wallabies squad, given the former Waratah was picked by Dave Rennie in 2020. He didn’t get a run, and after some injury issues, Ramm then departed Australia to join the Saints at the end of 2022.

Ramm’s call-up comes ahead of Dylan Pietsch and Corey Toole, who were both regular starters for the Wallabies last year under Schmidt but have fallen out of favour with Kiss.

“With Hunter’s unavailability we’re excited by what Kurtley can bring to the group,” Kiss said. “He’s got 95 caps worth of Test experience and whilst he will primarily cover inside centre he has the versatility to play a number of positions across the backline.

“Kurtley’s also been in great form for the Western Force in Super Rugby Pacific and Super Rugby AUS and is excited to contribute to the environment.

“At the same time, James is a player we’ve kept a keen eye on for a while and his form for Northland has been exceptional in recent times.

“He’s someone who knows the UK well, having spent a very successful period with Northampton, and can cover multiple positions across the backline.”

The Wallabies also announced Kalani Thomas will be joining the touring squad as a fourth halfback, given Tate McDermott is on standby to return to Australia for the birth of his first child. Thomas, who is with the Australia A squad in the USA, will join Ryan Lonergan, Teddy Wilson and McDermott.

Tom Hooper

Meanwhile, fears about Tom Hooper being ruled out of action for the entire four-Test tour have been allayed, with positive news emerging from scans on an injured shoulder.

Hooper left the field in a game for Exeter at the weekend after copping a knock on the same shoulder in which he suffered a fractured scapula in early July, when playing for the Wallabies against Ireland.

There were concerns Hooper could miss all the Wallabies’ matches in November if there was a re-fracture, but scans have ruled that out, according to informed sources. While Hooper may miss the opening Test against England on November 9, there are now hopes the big back-rower will be fit to take on Scotland and Wales in the following weeks.
