Rugby league great Billy Slater has won plenty of new fans for his work as trackside reporter. But his horse, Sammy, might have got him in some trouble.
Slater, who trained as a jockey in his youth before moving to rugby league, was doing a cross to Nine’s coverage, from atop Sammy, when the horse stuck his head down and started feasting on some of Flemington’s famous roses.
“This is young Sammy, my vehicle of choice today,” Slater told Nine, introducing his horse.
“I don’t know if the gardener is going to be too happy with Sammy after he touched into these roses.”
I’m sure he isn’t the first horse at Flemington to get into the roses.
