Naufahu Whyte is all big hair, big laughs and big heart.
The Roosters’ undisputed pack leader is ready for his close-up with the Herald’s photographer at the top of Allianz Stadium on Monday morning.
He takes a mean photo. An even better kick-off carry. His Roosters teammates have gone so far as to declare him the NRL’s best front-rower.
Which is one thing. But when Addin Fonua-Blake, the Dally M prop of the year in 2024 and 2025, declares “he’s been the best prop in the game this year”, you do want to know what’s in the secret sauce.
“There’s a big part of Spencer [Leniu] in me, he’s my front-row partner,” Whyte laughs. “And there’s parts of Jared [Waerea-Hargreaves] and big Linds [Roosters prop Lindsay Collins] in my game, too. You put on those No.8 and the No.10 jersey and you go out there together to do those jerseys and each other proud.
“You feed off each other, so when I see ‘Back Fence Spence’ firing up and doing his thing, I’m right there with him taking the next carry because that’s how the front-row brotherhood works, you know?”
As anyone at the Roosters will confirm, Whyte sees a side to Leniu beyond what the general rugby league public see. The two Auckland boys have been roommates on away trips for the past few years, while both are doting dads. When they’re not tearing into opposition defensive lines, that is.
The Dolphins, Friday night’s preliminary final opponents, have first-hand experience of the latter. One contest last year was memorably reduced to 11 on 11 when Whyte and Leniu were among four players sin-binned for their roles in a series of scuffles up and down Suncorp Stadium, where the sides will do battle again on Friday.
“I wouldn’t change a thing about the way Spencer plays and I’ll follow him anywhere,” Whyte says.
“I love that side of the game, I think it brings the best out of me. But there’s a fine line to it too of course, and we know we have to tread it.”
Not least because the Roosters need the best prop of 2026 on the paddock. His 25-minute stint in Saturday’s semi-final win over Cronulla raised eyebrows. Especially given he blew up at club staffers wanting to know why he was being kept in cotton wool.
“Patience, Naufahu”, was the response.
“He’s definitely our forward leader, he’s our alpha,” Siua Wong says. “I look at the way he plays – and he plays big minutes every week – and churns out big metres in a game that’s just getting faster and faster, and I just wonder how he does it?
“He’s got the same mantra as Jared did. It’s, ‘I’m going to run over you or stop you running over me’. And that’s it.”
Connor Watson has seen the forthright approach in Whyte’s leadership – a facet that stretches as far back as his schoolboy days at Auckland’s Kelston Boys High, when Super Rugby franchises Auckland and Waikato eyed him off.
“I just found out, not that long ago that [Whyte] was a school captain,” Watson says. “And it makes a bit of sense to me because he talks so well in meetings and has great points and speaks from the heart. He doesn’t say too much but when he does, everyone listens, and he certainly knows what he’s talking about.”
The Roosters re-signed Whyte midway through 2025 on a three-year deal that pushes his salary up past over $800,000 annually, but is still well short of the seven-figure sums earned by Payne Haas, Fonua-Blake, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Joe Tapine.
Whyte has grown into his roles at the Roosters on and off the field, and at 24, still has so much ahead of him. The best bit might be that he knows it, too.
“I came in this year off the back of a successful 2025 season for myself, I know that,” Whyte says.
“But I also wasn’t satisfied, either. And I don’t think I’m ever going to be completely satisfied, which I kind of like. I think I always will be looking for something in my game to add, maybe an offload or extra effort in live-ball or whatever. There’s always the technical stuff.
“And for me, I think a lot of the NRL and playing at this level is about how you approach the game and your professionalism mentally. We’re all pretty good physically right?
“We’re all big and athletic, and as long as you’re fit and healthy, then what’s the difference – looking after your mental game. And for me, that means being happy and locked in to do my job in the middle.”
