State voters will weigh in on changes to the income tax rate this November.
RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina House has approved three constitutional amendments that would set limits on local property tax increases.
Two of the three amendments made to this November’s ballot will give voters the opportunity to weigh in on the issue. The bill was supported by all House Republicans and unaffiliated Representatives Carla Cunningham and Nasif Majeed.
House Bill 1089, aimed at limiting the local property tax increases, is tied to factors like inflation and population growth. Speaker Destin Hall said “Property taxes are out of control, and some local governments are abusing their power by overtaxing and under delivering for their constituents. It’s time for real reform, and this constitutional amendment on levy limits will help stop runaway property tax hikes and protect North Carolina taxpayers.”
Senate Bill 1080, also on the statewide bill for November, would cap North Carolina’s income tax rate at 3.5%.
House Bill 443 modifies the process for filling vacancies in elected Council of State offices. Both House Bill 443 and 1089 now move to the Senate for approval. Senate Bill 1080 will be on the statewide ballot this fall.
