Vern Cotter pauses for a moment and considers his answer when asked what attracted him to take the Queensland Reds’ coaching reins.

After some contemplation, the Kiwi mentor’s answer provides a telling insight into the man now tasked with “bridging the gap” between Australian rugby and their New Zealand rivals ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

“I haven’t coached an Australian team, and I’ve always been tempted to challenge myself in different environments,” Cotter said.

“The high-performance in Australia has always fascinated me, and [being] a World Cup was one of the big things that was an attraction because you always see the best of people going into a World Cup.

“Every team starts a competition wanting to win it, but that’s the only reason I’ve come here – to win the competition.”

Cotter’s resume is illustrious. A Super Rugby Pacific trophy with the Auckland Blues in 2024 following Top 14 silverware in France with Clermont. As a forwards coach, he helped oversee back-to-back premierships with the Crusaders in 2005 and 2006, while he took Scotland to the final eight at the 2015 World Cup.

He succeeds a Reds team which, under now Wallabies coach Les Kiss, lost three straight quarterfinals – a theme which replicated their season finishes under Kiss’ predecessor Brad Thorn in 2022 and 2023.

All those defeats came across the ditch. Of the four titles won by an Australian side, the last was the Waratahs in 2014.

Cotter sensed there was “an underlying frustration within the playing group” for this run of exits, but felt there was not a great gap between the Australian and New Zealand sides, despite the latter accounting for 22 of 29 Super Rugby titles.

He believed there was simply “two or three per cent” of growth needed to turn the Reds into a premiership juggernaut.

“I think there are some obvious shifts we need to get. It’s a quality playing group, there’s no doubt about that, and there are quality players coming through … I think we just need to develop an edge in our game so we remain consistent,” Cotter said.

“In a one-off game, the talent is there to become competitive with other teams in the competition, but you need to do that all season, and you need to be able to rock and roll through the tough games.

“The key shifts will be around becoming more physical, becoming better prepared physically, so there’s a big emphasis on that – making sure we’re robust enough to be able to put in performances week in, week out.

“But you’ve got to have fun as well, so we’ll make sure we enjoy the contest and embrace the difficulty of it. I think the players here embrace the physicality, which is music to my ears.”

It is the balance of enjoyment and structure which should appeal to Australian rugby followers, with Cotter noting that with a fan base comes a need to play an enterprising style, while stressing “you don’t get points [for] artist display, you have to be effective”.

Now with his feet under the desk at Ballymore, Cotter will get his first chance to lead the Reds’ quest towards premiership glory when he guides his squad through the Super Rugby Australia campaign – beginning on September 12 against the Force.

Despite missing several Test stars, he will boast plenty of Wallabies caps with Tom Lynagh, Josh Flook, Zane Nonggorr, Izaia Perese and Matt Faessler all named.

Cotter offered a wry smile when asked how he felt about bettering Wallabies’ hopefuls ahead of the World Cup, given his New Zealand links, before emphasising “the priority is around our boys”.

He revealed Lynagh was continuing to nurse a hamstring injury which had limited him to just 18 minutes of Super Rugby action in 2026, but was confident he would have a role to play in the forthcoming campaign.

“He’s a great little player, he trained really well last week, and I was impressed with him,” he said.

“He could feel his hammy slightly at the end of the week, so we pulled him out of training, so we want to prepare and reinforce his body as best we can before we put it under duress.

“It may be we manage him through these games so we can hit January really confident.”
