Clayton Jones said his explanation comes as the town planner has also stepped down fueling even more questions from residents.
WEDDINGTON, N.C. โ Former town official Clayton Jones said the town is operating with two full-time departments, the town administrator and the townโs planner, but he argues the lack of structure is leaving gaps in supervision.
“We knew something wasnโt right here in town council, we didnโt know what it was so we started asking questions,” Jones said.
Jones addressed the Weddington Town Council after resigning back in April highlighting significant issues. He was only five months into the job.
Jones said his biggest reason for stepping down was due to lack of structure with no real oversight over the townโs two department heads.
“No one managed or directed the town planner or administrator,” Jones said. “Doors were closed and locked when they shouldโve been open and you donโt know why.”
Jones said the impacts are showing up in the work itself, including with issues leading to missed deadlines, development packages sent with missing significant items and citizens being ignored.
Since then, town planner Greg Gordos has resigned effective April 30. The back-to-back resignations are now pointing to deeper concerns inside Weddington town government.
“I knew the town planner was not happy here, I hope after this things come to light they will take a look at their priorities and try to do what’s right by the town,” Jones said.
As residents continue to push for transparency, Jones said he hopes his decision to step down will put the town under a microscope sparking closer scrutiny on how operations are managed.
